2. Principle

You can use this site without giving a name, address or phone number. We collect only what is needed to run the platform.

3. Data we collect

a) Bang reports

When you submit a report we store: noise type, chosen city, timestamp and a SHA-256 hash of your IP address. The hash cannot be reversed. Your real IP is not stored. The hash is only for spam and abuse protection.

Legal basis: legitimate interest (UK GDPR / GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).

b) GPS location (optional)

Only if you choose to share it do we store GPS coordinates. For the public map they are deliberately blurred so the exact spot is not visible. Sharing location is optional.

Legal basis: consent (Art. 6(1)(a)).

c) Comments

For comments we store the username you choose, the text, the timestamp and an IP hash as above. No account is required.

d) Page views

We log anonymised page views (city, language, referrer, user agent and IP hash) to improve the site. There is no cross-site tracking.

4. Cookies

We use technically necessary session cookies (for example CSRF protection). This site does not serve advertising and sets no advertising cookies.

5. Third parties

Maps: Leaflet / CARTO. Bot protection: Cloudflare Turnstile. These providers may receive your IP address when their services load.

6. Hosting

This site is hosted on a dedicated server in the United Kingdom (Manchester). Access logs (IP, time, page) are created automatically and deleted after the statutory period.

7. Your rights

You can ask for access, correction, deletion or object to processing, and you can complain to a supervisory authority (UK ICO, an EU data protection authority, or the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner if you are in Australia). Contact: info@whatwasthatbang.com

8. Security

Traffic is HTTPS (TLS). IPs are hashed with SHA-256 before storage. Public GPS points are blurred. Forms use CSRF tokens and bot protection.

9. Retention

Reports and comments are kept indefinitely as the core content of the site. You can ask for your posts to be deleted. Page-view data is kept for statistics and contains no directly identifying information.

10. Changes

We may update this policy. The current version is always on this page. Updated: 21 August 2026.
